Watch Whatcha Thinkin’! New Brain Microchip Turns Thoughts Into Text

When you think about breakthroughs that sound like a product from Skynet in the Termninator movies, it’s easy to forget just how life-changing they could be for some people.

A group called Braingate has developed technology that allows someone to type on a screen by just thinking about writing the words they want to type. Controlling a computer with just your mind is definitely amazing, but the applications it can be used for are even more amazing.

The test subject they used is a great example. After having two tiny square brain implants inserted into his head, a 65-year-old paralyzed man was able to type on the screen at “about the same speed a person of that age can type on a smartphone,” according to the researchers.

This is really cool stuff that could help a lot of physically impaired people communicate and use the internet, but it’s not quite ready for widespread use; Braingate says they need more clinical trials to demonstrate the “longevity and safety” of the implants first.

And to make sure Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t show up to say “come with me if you want to live!”
