Local Animal Shelter Celebrates 130 Years

On July 22nd, 2021, the Ulster County SPCA is celebrating their 130th anniversary. Since 1891, they have provided shelter, medical care, and adoption opportunities for the abused, neglected and homeless animals of Ulster County, NY. A small ceremony and Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting will be held in honor of the 130th anniversary at 10:30am on July 22nd, and supporters as well as community members are welcome to attend.

The Ulster County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals) was first founded in 1891 in Kingston. An independent, private non-profit, the organization is unrelated to the more familiar ASPCA, and does not receive funding from either the ASPCA or the Ulster County government. As such, they are entirely reliant on charitable donations and support from the Ulster County community to continue providing their multitude of life-changing services and programs.

The Ulster County SPCA does more than just provide shelter and adoption opportunities for animals. They change lives, both animals’ and humans’.

They offer a multitude of community services, including low-cost clinic services, humane education, a free community pet food pantry, and as the only Humane Law Enforcement agency in the county, investigate criminal abuse and neglect of animals. But most importantly, they promote and preserve the humane-animal bond, working to keep pets and people together. Without charitable donations, this community-supported and county-orientated organization would not be here 130 years after its founding.
