SAUGERTIES – Police have arrested a Saugerties resident on charges of menacing with a handgun after responding to a call on Sunday, August 8 at a residence on Route 32.
Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra said his officers responded to a report that a man was causing damage to a house where he was a guest. Officers determined that the man, identified as 40-year-old Michael Cook had been involved in a dispute with the female victim and he waived a handgun in the face of the woman and threatened her.
Cook was arrested on the charge of Menacing, a misdemeanor, processed and then issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Saugerties Court at a later date to answer his charges.
Chief Sinagra addressed the release of Cook saying “Because the incident was not domestic in nature, the current bail reform does not permit the defendant to be arraigned at the time of the incident and police had no other choice then to release the defendant on an appearance ticket. The victim will be eligible to obtain an order or protection at the time of arraignment if one is so desired.”
Saugerties Police were assisted by Ulster County Child Protective Services in the investigation.
